The Simplest of Notes got an Upgrade

by Shaun

Just about a month ago I wrote a blog post about SimpleNote and how great of an app it was. Well, just a couple of weeks ago, they came out with SimpleNote 2.0. And this is a very welcome upgrade and it really is a great app. Let me show you around the app.

First, for those of you that don’t know Simplenote is a note taking app for the iPhone, iPad, and on the web. It really is just like its name says. It is a simple, if not too simple, note taking app that syncs across any iDevice and the web. Already, these features had made this a really easy and convenient app to use for note taking. But some of the new features have made it even better.

As you can see from the screenshot above, not a lot has changed from a design standpoint. But what has changed are some of the features. One of the features pointed out above is a tagging feature. You can now tag notes. The nice thing about this is these tags now act as folders for the different notes that you have as you can see from the picture below.

The next feature that was added to the new Simplenote is a “go back in time” feature. If you have more than one version of a note, you can go back in time and use an older version of the note if that is what you want. All you have to do is click on the clock icon and a scroll bar will appear and you can scroll back and forth to see the different revisions that are there for that specific note.

Another cool feature that has been added is a sharing and publishing feature. You can now easily share a note from right within the app. If you decide to share the note, Simplenote automatically brings up an email screen with a prewritten message for you. All you have to do is put in the email addresses of the people you want to share the note with. The publishing feature is basically somewhat the same. What Simplenote does is they create a url for your note and will put it in the email to share with who you want.

A couple of smaller features that have also been added are a search bar and a pin. You can now search through all your notes which is nice to be able to do especially if you have a lot of notes. The pin feature is something that is only on the web version right now. What it does is that if you pin a note, the note automatically goes to the top of your notes list.

These are the major revisions of Simplenote. These are very welcome additions and it seems like they are not done just yet.

I think part of the reason why I like Simplenote so much is its simplicity of use and the fact that it syncs between all of my devices. So I can be just about anywhere and I can access my notes if need be. But, at the same time, there are other apps like Evernote that do the same things, but are packed with a ton more features. I guess if you are just looking for strictly a note taking app, this is definitely the one for you. You can get the iPad andiPhone app at the App Store. They are both free to download.

So do you use Simplenote? If so, what do you think? Is there a note taking app out there that you like better?
